Wadebridge to Padstow
Cycling from Wadebridge to Padstow on the Camel Trail
This part of the Camel Trail is by far the most popular. With all the delights of Padstow at the end, your 5 mile cycle along a completely traffic free trail, follows the River Camel as it grows to meet the Atlantic Coast just past the popular fishing village of Padstow.
Panoramic Views & Lots To Discover
The Camel Trail is completely flat and winds it’s way along the old railway route. On this part of the trail you’ll find the old slate quarry where you can stop for a cup of tea and cake during the warmer months. If you want to explore you can, at low tide, venture onto the slate beach where there is a platform used by locals for fishing and kids, of all ages, for exploring!
History
The iconic bridge on the Camel Trail is a favourite spot for many who use the trail. It’s especially stunning in the morning and evenings as the sun sets and rises showing off all the beautiful ironwork.
There are also two lovely little beaches that are exposed during low tides and worth exploring if you want a more relaxed day.
All our bikes come with locks and chains so you don’t need to worry about them while you take a well earned rest!
A Natural Beauty
If you are a nature lover then you will love the trail. There are a variety of wild flowers and Cornish shrubs which provide beautiful colours all year round. You might even come across the odd apple tree which has grown from the pips of apples thrown from the trains in days gone by.
If you’re lucky you might even get to see some wildlife. I’ve been lucky enough to see everything from rabbits and weasels to badgers and deer. It’s also a must for bird spotters, my favourite resident bird is the Kingfishers but you’ll also see egrets, herons, cormorants and many more species who thrive on the river.
Visit All Year Round
The Camel Trail is one of those magical places which is worth visiting no matter what time of year.
Off season you can enjoy a much quieter more peaceful trail and much more wildlife. The views are still spectacular and the winter light and colours it reveals are a highlight of most peoples trip to Cornwall.
And Of Course, Padstow
Who could forget Padstow? With all it’s culinary delights, independent and high street shops plus a whole heap of character, Padstow is on everyone’s to do list when they come to Cornwall. This is totally understandable. Padstow has always been one of our favourite places to visit, even as kids. Hours wasted catching crabs in the harbour, cosy pubs to enjoy as we grew older and now numerous delicious places to eat, and we still enjoy a bit of crabbing with or without the kids! Whatever you enjoy, a cycle to Padstow along the beautiful Camel Trail, a few hours in Padstow and a gentle cycle home is a day out anyone can enjoy.
